Abia Warriors Beat Kwara United 1-0

Abia Warriors Football Club of Umuahia got back to winning ways, recording their first win in the second stanza of the Nigeria Premier Football League with a hard fought 1-0 victory over Kwara United of Ilorin in Aba.

A brilliant solo goal from Sunday Megwo in the 54th minute secured the maximum points for the Warriors.

Having drawn their last home game, the Warriors needed a win to boost their confidence and also make their fans happy, and they made their intentions known from kick off pinning their opponents to their own half with incessant attack.

In the build up to the game, Abia Warriors captain, Augustine Njoku had assured the fans of victory, and the team did not disappoint at the Enyimba International Stadium venue of the week 22 encounter.

With the pressure mounting on the visitors, it was only a matter of time before the inevitable will happen.

Sunday Megwo connected a through pass from Emmanuel Onu. He danced his way from the left side of attack into the visitors box, sold a dummy cross that left Kwara United’s goalkeeper, Solihu Dogo lying on the ground, before brilliantly slamming the ball into the roof of the net for his fourth goal of the season. It was a delightful goal that drew huge applause from the spectators.

The introduction of Meme Okike, Antoine Desouza and veteran defender Ifeanyi Anaemena by the home team kept the visitors on edge, and solidified Abia Warriors’ defence.

No further goals were scored by the home side despite numerous attacks.

Abia Warriors Coach, Bethel Oji in his post match interview praised the spirited effort of his wards, and assured the fans of a good outing in their next game against Kano Pillars in Nigeria’s groundnut city.
