Abia Warriors Football Club of Umuahia started the second stanza of the ongoing Nigeria Premier Football League with a bang, hitting visiting Bayelsa United 1-0 in a pulsating week 20 game decided at the Umuahia Township Stadium.
A fourth minute headed goal by Sunday Megwo earned the Warriors the three points at stake, and ensured they did a double over the Ladan Bosso tutored boys, having won by same margin during the first leg in Yenagoa last month.
Sunday Megwo, the CHAN Eagles invitee was the only change in Coach Imama Amapakabo’s team that defeated Bayelsa United in that reverse fixture, and he did not disappoint as spectators were still making their way into the arena when he struck.
And it was a double delight for the centre forward as his wife was delivered of a baby girl 24 hours earlier.
It was not all rosy for the Warriors though, as they had to battle like Trojans to match the physicality of the visitors, who came all out after going behind.
However, Umu Chineke were not to be denied as they held off the United challenge to win their third game in a row.
Up next for the Warriors is a mid-week tie against Remo Stars in Ikenne on Wednesday 29th January 2025.
