Abia Warriors Football Club extended their home invincibility in the ongoing Nigeria Premier Football League with a routine 1-0 victory over their neighbours, Enugu Rangers International FC in a Match Day 10 game played at the Umuahia Township Stadium.
It was an encounter that lived up to its billing as the spectators sat at the edges of their seats watching the explosive, entertaining, intriguing, and captivating oriental battle.
Spectators were still making their way into the arena when Collins Nwoburuoke nodded the Warriors ahead with the game only two minutes old for what later proved to be the winner following a well-tailored corner kick from Emmanuel Onu.
In the 20th minute, Samson Obi thought he had scored the second for the home side after being put through on goal with a defence-splitting pass by the enterprising Emmanuel Onu, only for the goal to be ruled out for offside.
Fifteen minutes later, Samson Obi missed what would have been a beauty, his shot going narrowly wide; Emmanuel Onu, the orchestrator of the through pass, passed again.
By this time, Samson Obi had constituted an unwanted nuisance to the Rangers defence, and he came close to scoring, only to be denied by the upright after a delightful combination with Meme Okike.
In the second half, the Abia Warriors failed to take the chances that came their way, and despite the visitor’s fightback, the Warriors’ rear guard, led by Captain of the Day, Ifeanyi Anaemena, kept them at bay until the centre referee sounded the last blast of his whistle.
Next for the Umuahia Warlords is an away game against Bayelsa United in Yenagoa.
